Sports medicine surgeon Dr. Riley J. Williams III recently demonstrated his commitment to fitness and performance by placing in the top 10 of his age group at the HYROX New York event.
HYROX is one of the fastest-growing fitness competitions in the world, combining endurance running with functional fitness challenges designed to test strength, stamina, and resilience. Competitors complete eight 1-kilometer runs interspersed with eight workout stations, creating a unique test of overall athletic performance.
For Dr. Williams, participation in events like HYROX extends beyond personal achievement. Maintaining a high level of athletic performance helps him better understand the physical and mental demands faced by the athletes he treats every day.
“Competing allows me to experience many of the same challenges my patients face, including training demands, recovery, injury prevention, and the pursuit of performance goals,” said Dr. Williams. “That perspective helps me connect with athletes and active individuals who are working to return to the activities they love.”
As Chief of the HSS Sports Medicine Institute and a trusted physician to professional, collegiate, and recreational athletes, Dr. Williams has dedicated his career to helping patients recover from injury and return to peak performance. His continued participation in demanding athletic events reflects his belief that understanding an athlete’s journey firsthand can enhance the care he provides.
